My Journey with PAN and DADA2
By Nikita, Age 39

I am Nikita, 39 years of age. I was diagnosed with PAN (Polyarteritis Nodosa) in 2007.

The initial symptoms included recurrent fever, weight loss, and red rashes on my hands and feet, especially in extreme cold. Unfortunately, no one could initially understand the issue, and the fever subsided on its own after 3–4 months.

Then suddenly, in April 2007, I suffered a stroke which led to the loss of vision in my right eye. I was immediately admitted to NIMHANS, Bangalore, where a sural nerve biopsy was conducted. The results confirmed vasculitis.

Following this, I was referred to Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where Dr. Ramakrishna treated me for PAN for almost 17 years. During those years, I experienced various symptoms such as ulcers on my toes, bluish discoloration of fingers and toes, rashes, weakness, and stomach pain.

In August 2022, a genetic mutation study conducted by Dr. Duggal at Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, confirmed that I had DADA2 (Deficiency of Adenosine Deaminase 2). Since then, I have been under his care and have been doing fairly well.

Yes, the initial days were very difficult, and it took a lot of strength and patience to reach where I am today. But with proper medication, consistent treatment, and the unwavering support of my family, I have been able to live a fairly normal and fulfilling life.

A good diet, regular exercise, yoga, and mental strength have definitely played an important role in my journey.

It is a difficult disease to deal with — but it is manageable. With the right care and attitude, one can live a healthy and happy life.

Thank you.
