In 2021, after receiving my COVID-19 vaccine, I faced an unexpected and terrifying battle with a rare and debilitating illness. What began as nosebleeds and difficulty breathing soon escalated into a health crisis that changed my life. For weeks, I could only breathe through my mouth, and my condition worsened to the point where I was in constant pain. I visited multiple doctors, some of whom were unable to diagnose my condition and even referred me to mental health professionals. The uncertainty was devastating, and I felt helpless as my symptoms persisted. Thankfully, my mother was with me every step of the way, providing unwavering support.
We sought help at RPGMC Tanda Hospital in Kangra, where I was admitted for 22 days, but still, no diagnosis was made. The doctors performed a painful operation on my nose without anesthesia, which is a memory I carry to this day. However, the procedure did not resolve my symptoms, and I was eventually sent home. Shortly after, I experienced severe trauma, vomiting, and dizziness, prompting another hospital visit. Despite these alarming symptoms, I was not treated as a priority. When I was finally seen by an ENT specialist, they performed an operation on my ear, but my condition only worsened.
Following the surgery, I lost sensation in one ear and could no longer hear. Additionally, I developed swelling in my hands and feet, causing intense pain that made it impossible to walk. My condition continued to deteriorate, and I began coughing up blood. My eyes turned red, and my joints ached unbearably. After weeks of suffering, blood tests revealed that my creatinine levels were dangerously high, and my organs were slowly failing.
At this point, my family decided to take me to PGI Chandigarh for emergency care. Upon arrival, I was treated as a priority, and within the first visit, the doctors diagnosed me with Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA), a rare autoimmune disease. The medical team, including Dr. Aman Sharma and Dr. Akash, immediately began treatment, administering medication and performing dialysis to stabilize my condition. Slowly, I regained some hearing in one ear, and my symptoms began to subside.
After weeks of treatment, I was discharged from PGI, finally on the path to recovery. It has been nearly three years since that time, and I am now healthy and strong. I will always be grateful to the doctors and staff at PGI for their compassionate care and expertise. Thanks to them, I was able to regain my health and live a full life once again.
I cannot express enough gratitude for their efforts and the support of my family throughout this journey. PGI Chandigarh is truly a beacon of hope for patients in need, and I owe my recovery to their tireless dedication and care.
